How To Care For Your Gold Filled Jewellery
Gold filled jewellery is an excellent alternative to solid gold for those who don’t have the budget to spend hundreds of dollars on one piece. However, without the proper maintenance, gold filled jewellery can quickly lose it’s sparkle and shine. Thankfully, they are easy to care for, and can last many years without tarnishing. Follow these key tips to make the most of your gold filled beauties!
1. Keep It Dry
Try to avoid wearing your gold filled jewellery while swimming or showering. Often times pools, and even oceans, will have salts or chemicals (ie. chlorine) that can be very abrasive. In the shower, harsh scrubbing can also begin to wear off external coatings. If you’re wearing rings, try to take them off before washing your hands. The occasional splash of water won’t cause much damage, but over time it can cause tarnish and discolouration.
2. Store Them Separately
When not in use, store your jewels separately in pouches or boxes. Leaving them out can expose them to oxidation and moisture. Keeping them in separate containers will prevent them from rubbing and scratching against each other.
3. Avoid Chemicals
Everyday products, such as perfume, hairspray, and hand cream, often contain many chemicals. These can quickly wear off the outer protective layer of your gold filled pieces, causing tarnish. Keep the jewellery off until you’re all done getting ready, and your skin is dry.
4. Keep It Clean
Every so often, wipe down your jewellery with unscented soap and a soft cloth. Do not scrub or apply pressure. Just a quick wipe will do. Rinse, and pat dry. As an alternative, you can use a jewellery polishing cloth or solution to maintain shine.
Being mindful of these tips will ensure that your precious gold filled pieces last for years to come!
